What Is Septorhinoplasty?
Septorhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that treats both functional and cosmetic problems of the nose, namely by straightening a deviated septum and improving the appearance of the nose’s outer structures.
It is not uncommon for patients to present with functional problems with a deviated septum, such as breathing problems, chronic sinus infections, inflammation, and irritation, along with cosmetic concerns such as:
- A large bump or hump on the nasal bridge
- A bulbous or fleshy nasal tip
- A crooked nose
- A disproportionate nose
When patients seek both functional and cosmetic improvements to the nose, septorhinoplasty is typically ideal.
What Are My Septorhinoplasty Options?
Dr. Diamond customizes each procedure to the patient’s needs and anatomy. Septorhinoplasty typically involves repairing a deviated septum and incorporating one or more cosmetic techniques to address other concerns. Septorhinoplasty can be performed using a closed approach, where incisions are hidden within the nose, or an open approach, where incisions are across the columella, allowing for greater visibility and revision.
Depending on your goals for your facial enhancement, Dr. Diamond may suggest one of the following complementary procedures.
Brow Lift
Brow lifts can help improve facial balance by providing a more elegant arch to the brows, creating a stronger facial frame. During the procedure, Dr. Diamond gently lifts the brow while also smoothing any forehead creases for subtle rejuvenation.
Diamond Facial Sculpting®
Natural-looking cosmetic results are all about balancing facial features for a seamless result. Many patients seeking rhinoplasty also benefit from enhancing other facial features with Dr. Diamond’s signature minimally invasive Diamond Facial Sculpting®, an advanced dermal filler technique that can increase volume in the cheeks, chin, or jawline to create a stronger contour. Dr. Diamond injects filler deep into the tissues to better mimic natural bone structure and achieve a lasting result without incisions or surgery.
Diamond Skin Therapy
Chiseled bone structure is only one part of the process; glowing, healthy skin is the best way to make your surgical results really shine. Dr. Diamond’s Diamond Skin Therapy is a customized skin care program unlike any other, offering advanced results through expert guidance and cutting-edge techniques and technology. Patients are provided with highly customized treatment plans, including an at-home skin care regimen and in-office luxury treatments, for beautiful skin at any age.

In this case, candidates for septorhinoplasty require a combination of techniques to address each concern.

How Septorhinoplasty Is Performed
Your Septorhinoplasty Consultation
Your initial septorhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Diamond is important for determining your candidacy for the procedure and the specific techniques Dr. Diamond may use to complete it. He will discuss your medical history, including any prior surgeries (cosmetic or otherwise) that may be relevant in treating your deviated septum. He will also need to know if you’ve had other treatments for your breathing problems, sleep apnea, or other conditions. He will examine your nose and listen to your goals for the cosmetic side of the procedure.
If you both decide that a septorhinoplasty is right for you, he will provide you with a surgical plan detailing the potential steps during surgery. Lastly, you will receive an accurate cost estimate.
Septorhinoplasty Procedure Steps
Your treatment plan will detail the steps of your procedure, as each septorhinoplasty is tailored to the patient’s needs and anatomy. Septorhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed using general anesthesia. As such, each procedure is entirely unique; no two septorhinoplasties are the same. However, a general septorhinoplasty procedure may look like the following:
- Dr. Diamond begins by making small incisions either inside the nose (closed) or across the small piece of skin between the nostrils, the columella (opened).
- After moving the mucous membrane away from the cartilage and bone, Dr. Diamond removes or reshapes the deviated part of the septum, leaving enough cartilage to maintain the structural integrity of the nose. Alternatively, a cartilage graft can be used.
- Next, Dr. Diamond will move on to the cosmetic portion of the procedure and will make the necessary adjustments that you outlined in your consultation, such as shaving down a dorsal hump, correcting any crooked structures, refining the tip of the nose, adjusting nostrils, or using a cartilage graft to reshape or strengthen the nose.
- Any additional procedures, like a brow lift, may be performed at this time as well.
- Once Dr. Diamond is pleased with the results, he will carefully close all incisions. Your nose will likely be bandaged and placed in a soft surgical splint, as well.
Septorhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare
Septorhinoplasty recovery takes about two weeks of downtime, with patients returning to work and normal activities at this time. You will be cleared to gradually increase your physical activity, but it’s important to avoid exercise, contact sports, or any activity that could damage or injure your nose. You will see Dr. Diamond for follow-up appointments, during which he will remove or downsize your splints as you progress.
Our team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions; be sure to follow these as closely as possible. You can always call our office if you have any questions during your recovery.
Septorhinoplasty Results
Your final results will take some time to appear, as bruising and swelling can disguise them for a few weeks. Your breathing issues will also improve as you heal. Swelling in the internal structures will dissipate, allowing your nasal passages to clear.
After about four weeks, you’ll start to see your final results. Your nose will be more symmetrical and straight, and it will better complement the rest of your facial features. Your deviated septum will be repaired, and you can breathe and sleep more easily—a welcome relief. As your cosmetic results improve over time, you’ll love your nose more and more each day.
