The Cost of Rejuvenation

A facelift is the ultimate facial rejuvenation procedure, known for its comprehensive treatment of some of the most common signs of aging: wrinkles and creases; loose, sagging skin; and a loss of facial sharpness. By lifting underlying structures and tightening loose skin, a facelift can turn back the clock 10 years or more.

But how much can someone expect to pay? National averages range from $8,500 to $12,000, although these prices vary widely, and many patients pay more than the top mark. So, how is all this determined? We’ll break down what goes into the cost of a facelift below.

What Do Plastic Surgery Prices Mean?

Cosmetic surgery pricing is difficult to pin down, partially because it’s so individualized—but there are certain industry standards you can count on to determine at least part of the price before your consultation.

Surgeon’s Fee or Surgical Fee

The surgeon’s fee is typically the price you see online, and it’s this data that we use to find national and local averages. It’s determined by a few factors, including:

  • Procedure difficulty. Not all procedures are created equal, and some are more technically complex than others. For example, facelifts and rhinoplasty are considered among the more technically challenging and time-consuming procedures, so they are priced higher than others. In addition to the basic standards of the procedure, each individual case varies in complexity based on the patient’s anatomy and needs.
  • The surgeon’s expertise. If your surgeon is a specialist or is renowned for their expertise, they will likely command higher fees. Specialists focus their practices on a single procedure or one type of procedure, giving them an edge over generalists and making patients feel more confident in their abilities.
  • Geographic location. Practices in more affluent, coastal, or metropolitan areas have higher overhead and higher costs of living, and often have a concentration of highly skilled specialists, so they likely charge more than others.

Anesthesia Fees

Each procedure requires anesthesia for the patient’s comfort and safety. Most procedures, including facelifts, require general anesthesia, which is more costly as it must be administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Some procedures can be performed in-office with local anesthesia or sedation, but this is only for short operations and minimally invasive procedures.

Facility Fees

The facility fees relate to the cost of performing the procedure in a surgical facility, such as an ambulatory surgical center or a hospital OR. Surgeons who use on-site or nearby facilities may be able to charge less than those who use hospital privileges, but it depends. You can find out what resources your surgeon has access to and how it affects cost during your consultation.

Miscellaneous Fees

Some procedures may incur additional costs for necessities such as medications or recovery supplies. Facelifts don’t typically require you to purchase a compression garment, unless you have combined your procedure with a neck lift. You may be prescribed antibiotics or pain medications, depending on your surgeon and health condition.

How to Determine the Final Cost of a Facelift

The best way to determine how much you can expect to pay is by scheduling a consultation with a board-certified facelift specialist. During your consultation, they will examine your face and evaluate your level of necessary revision. They will also listen to your concerns and goals, and suggest a possible route to get you the result you want. This may or may not include combination procedures like skin resurfacing or fat grafting to restore lost volume.

Once you both decide this is the right procedure for you, they will supply you with an accurate cost estimate for your facelift and any combined procedures.

Keep in mind: With plastic surgery, you get what you pay for. If you want to improve your aesthetic appearance, boost your confidence, and feel like a more vibrant version of yourself, a facelift with an experienced, reputable plastic surgeon is well worth the price.
