What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?
Revision rhinoplasty, also called rhinoplasty reconstruction, is an advanced surgical technique that addresses aesthetic and/or functional issues after an initial rhinoplasty. Revision rhinoplasty differs from primary rhinoplasty in a number of ways:
- Revision rhinoplasty is more technically challenging due to the presence of scar tissue and altered nasal structures.
- Revision rhinoplasty results may be limited by the amount of available tissue and the number of prior procedures.
- Revision rhinoplasty can be indicated for multiple reasons, including an unsatisfactory aesthetic appearance, functional breathing issues, poor healing, or damage after the initial procedure.
What Are My Revision Rhinoplasty Options?
Revision procedures, such as revision rhinoplasty, are entirely customized and based primarily on the nose’s current condition and the patient’s desired results. Dr. Diamond will adjust his approach based on your needs and goals for revision. Depending on the length of the procedure, Dr. Diamond may recommend a complementary surgical procedure to better enhance facial balance and improve overall aesthetic results.
Custom Facial Implants
Certain facial features influence facial harmony more than others, and refining these attributes is often the key to improving aesthetics. The nose, chin, and jaw are typically the features that require more balance in projection and contour. Custom facial implants, such as chin, cheek, or temple augmentation, can be excellent options for improving facial symmetry.
Diamond Facial Sculpting®
Similar to facial implants, Dr. Diamond’s signature treatment, Diamond Facial Sculpting®, is a fantastic option for creating more balance in facial features without surgery. Using precise dermal filler injections, Dr. Diamond enhances facial features and creates optimal angles, maximizing the patient’s natural beauty.
Brow Lift
A brow lift provides both facial rejuvenation benefits by smoothing deep forehead creases and lifting the brows into a more delicate arch, effectively framing the rest of the face. This procedure works well for rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, helping create a more pleasing arch and a youthful appearance.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty?
Candidates for revision rhinoplasty are unhappy with the aesthetic or functional results of one or more prior rhinoplasty procedures. Common issues can include internal or external valve collapse, septal deviation, bumps, dents, depressions, crooked bridges, pinched or “piggy” nasal tips, and others. Ideal candidates should also:
- Be at least 12 to 18 months past previous surgeries
- Be in good health
- Be nonsmokers or willing to quit
- Have reasonable expectations for results
The best way to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for revision rhinoplasty and to learn about your options is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Diamond. Call (310) 859-9816 or complete the contact form to get started.

How Revision Rhinoplasty Is Performed
Your Revision Rhinoplasty Consultation
Your consultation with Dr. Diamond is an important part of the revision rhinoplasty process. You likely remember your consultation for your initial rhinoplasty: You reviewed before and after images, discussed your goals, and reviewed your medical history. This consultation will involve the same process.
In addition to those topics, Dr. Diamond will discuss your previous surgery, as this helps him determine where the procedure went wrong: Miscommunications about aesthetics, poor healing, or surgical complications can all lead to an unsatisfactory result. Once he has all the information he needs, he can plan the appropriate approach for your procedure.
After the surgical plan has been drafted and agreed upon, our team will provide you with an accurate cost estimate.
Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure Steps
The surgical steps for revision rhinoplasty are often directly related to the current status of the nasal structure and anatomy, as well as the patient’s desired results. Dr. Diamond will create an individualized plan for each patient. However, a general rhinoplasty revision procedure may look like the following:
- Dr. Diamond will begin by making incisions at the appropriate location, most likely using an open rhinoplasty technique rather than a closed one, to allow maximum visibility of the internal nasal structures.
- Through the incisions, Dr. Diamond will make the necessary adjustments. In some cases, a cartilage graft may be needed to rebuild the nasal structure if the initial procedure resulted in overexcision of tissue.
- Complementary procedures, like a brow lift, may be performed at the same time, depending on the duration of each procedure.
- Once Dr. Diamond is satisfied with the results, he will carefully close the incisions.
Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare
Recovery after revision rhinoplasty is similar to that of a primary rhinoplasty but may have longer restrictions. Expect some swelling, bruising (including around the eyes), and discomfort. Avoid strenuous activities for at least four weeks, and continue to avoid contact sports or any activity that can cause accidental injury to your nose.
You will be given a nasal splint to help maintain your nose’s structure and provide an extra layer of protection. You may be asked to wear this longer than your initial procedure, but Dr. Diamond will give you specific instructions.
Revision Rhinoplasty Results
As with primary rhinoplasty, results for revision rhinoplasty take some time to become obvious. As you heal, your results will improve. This is especially true for more subtle changes, such as tip refinement. Your nose will be more symmetrical and better fit your facial structure, improving a variety of aesthetic and functional concerns.
