Even with proper planning and a smoothly-executed surgery, the results of an initial breast augmentation procedure can turn out poorly and leave a woman with complications. The problems that may develop months or even years after breast enlargement surgery are typically implant-related. One of our board certified plastic surgeons will meet with you during a consultation to assess the problem, and determine whether or not breast implant revision surgery is right for you.
The most common complication of breast augmentation is capsular contracture, which is most likely to occur within six weeks after the patient’s original procedure.
Capsular contracture is the body’s normal “walling off” process, a defense mechanism for dealing with something that is not biologically recognized. It is natural for scar tissue to form around any foreign object in the body, but it is the tightening of the scar tissue that is cause for concern. This not part of the natural healing process, and can cause the breast to feel firm, unnatural, and in some cases, painful.
Some of the other common reasons for breast revision surgery is due to:
In many cases, the breast revision procedure involves replacing the saline or silicone gel implants in one procedure. They can also be removed, and new implants can be inserted at a later date. The specific treatment plan will depend on the patient’s individual circumstance and desires.
In order to qualify for breast revision surgery, you must be physically and mentally healthy and have realistic expectations and goals; a secondary procedure is just as significant as the original procedure and does not guarantee perfect results. If you have implants and notice that your breasts appear misshapen, feel painful, and/or are significantly firm, please contact the office of Dr. Diamond and schedule an appointment with one of our board certified plastic surgeons. Should an an X-ray (MRI) suggest that your silicone implant leaked, it is very important you reach us right away.
If the patient requires a straightforward implant exchange procedure or capsular contracture corrective surgery, the doctor may be able to create the incision through the patient’s original breast augmentation scar. If breast lift surgery is also desired, new incisions will be made in the nipple and areola areas.
There are potential risks and complications associated with every type of plastic surgery procedure, even at the hands of a qualified specialist. Some of the most common problems that may develop after an operation are: poor scarring and healing of incisions, infection, reaction to anesthesia, and bleeding. Specific to breast augmentation, rupturing/deflation, capsular contracture, and changes in nipple and/or breast sensation.
The overall cost of breast revision surgery varies depending on the necessary treatment plan. Some of the fees involved with this procedure include the:
If breast revision is performed for aesthetic reasons, it is typically not covered by insurance. Should an implant revision procedure be performed following breast cancer reconstruction, insurance coverage may be available. This can be discussed during your consultation at the practice of Dr. Diamond.
After your revision surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your breasts, and you may wear an elastic bandage or support bra for a few weeks to help minimize swelling and provide support. Depending on the your particular case, a small, thin tube is temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid.
Healing after breast revision surgery may take a little longer than your initial breast surgery, which could be due to many factors (e.g., the extent of problem, if more than one procedure was performed, etc). Therefore, it is important to follow all post-operative care instructions. You will learn when it is best to return to work as well as when to resume normal activities. Prescribed medication can help to alleviate any discomfort or pain that develops during that develops during the healing process.
Breast revision can create beautiful, improved results by correcting post-operative complications or by making the necessary improvements to achieve a shape and size you are satisfied with. No plastic surgery ensures a perfect result, but you may anticipate a sufficiently improved appearance with the help of breast revision.
