I am glad to see the new press that chin implants have received in the news over the last few weeks. Chin implants have been one of my favorite procedures to perform over the last 10 years and I have done more than any surgeon that I know of over that period of time. Chin implants are the most effective way to improve someone’s self esteem, especially for those people who have microgenia or a weak chin. The benefits of chin augmentation are vast. A chin augmentation will accomplish several very important goals for many people. It can improve a person’s facial balance, structure and definition. These benefits alone are very significant for most people, young and old. The other benefits of chin augmentation consist of the anti-aging effects including correction of the jowl, droopy chin and looseness of the skin under the chin. These areas are addressed by placing a chin implant as this will place tension on the loose skin making it tighter. Therefore the chin implant procedure is one of the most effective techniques to make improvements to a person’s face.
The implants are made of a solid but soft silicone rubber that cannot be felt under the skin. The implant never moves and does not ever need to be replaced. Unlike breast implants that are made of liquid silicone inside a shell, there is no liquid in a chin implant therefore there is no risk of leakage of silicone. There are many different shapes and sizes of implants and it is up to the surgeon to know which style and size will look best for a given person. Everyone is different and therefore the implant that an individual receives must be carefully planned and thought out. Often the implant must be customized to fit the patient’s exact anatomy. I do an equal amount of chin implants on both men and women, both young and old. The procedure takes about 30 to 40 minutes and can be done under local anesthesia in the office. Chin augmentation is one of the most powerful techniques we have in our arsenal to improve one’s appearance and something that has been extremely beneficial for my patients over the years.
