Pandora's Botox: Caveat Emptor
Botox, Restylane, silicone, Artecoll-all injectables aren't equal, say Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Jason B. Diamond and L.A. dermatologist Brian P. Mekelburg.
What's the difference among the injectables?
Collagen and Restylane are fillers deemed safe for certain uses by the FDA. Botox is also FDA-approved; it's a toxin derivative that temporarily paralyzes muscles. Artecoll is a filler not approved by FDA at all, says Diamond.
Is it smart to have these cosmetic injections at someone's home?
It's poor judgment, say Mekelburg. Adds Diamond: In a setting like that, you have no idea what this person is really using, or whether theyre qualified. You are playing Russian roulette with your face.
What's the downside of Artecoll?
It's bad stuff; I have a patient who had it injected into her lips in Europe and now they're bumpy, says Mekelburg. The plastic pellets are encrusted in collagen; the body absorbs the collagen, but the pellets stay behind.
