"Beverly Hills Facelift"

Creating harmony between the lower and middle thirds of the face

As a Beverly Hills board certified Facial Plastic and reconstructive surgeon I have the honor, privilege and challenge of seeing people from all over the world who have had facelifts elsewhere who are unhappy with their current facelift or are ready to have their second facelift.

One of the most common complaints that I hear is the patient feels that they look "done". Many patients complain that their scars are too visible. Many people also complain that their faces seem hollowed out particularly around the eyes. All of these problems are tell tale signs that someone has undergone a facial rejuvenation procedure.

One of the most important aspects of performing this type of surgery is to ensure that the results are natural such that a person will look rested without looking operated on. Fortunately, all of the above mentioned problems are avoidable at the time of primary surgery and usually correctable with an appropriately performed secondary facelift. It is essential to create a harmony between the upper third ( brows, upper eyelids), the middle third ( cheeks and lower eyelids) and the lower third ( neck and jawline).

We have all seen the people who have tight neck and jawlines but saggy cheeks and this is known as the lateral sweep deformity which occurs as a result of not addressing the middle third of the face at the time of the facelift procedure. There are several methods that are extremely effective at correcting the middle third of the face to avoid the above mentioned deformity. A deep plane facelift, midface lift, fat transfer, or submalar implants are all good options to create the appropriate balance between the lower and middle third of the face.

Many of these procedures alone will provide an excellent rejuvenation of the cheeks but often times a given person may require a combination of the above procures. Because every face is different the appropriate procedure will be based on the anatomy and particular goals and desires of each individual. Today we are able to produce far superior facelift result then we have in the past and this is in the most part due to a better understanding of the aging process as well as advancement in technology and surgical techniques. In the next article we will address the challenge of creating harmony between the upper third of the face with the lower two thirds of the face.
